Bitcoin eyes $98K after 5 week squeeze – 3 signals to watch this macro heavy week

Zooming out, Bitcoin’s technical setup looks like a textbook pre-breakout setup.

For more than five weeks, BTC has been consolidating around $85k, while weekly closes continue to form higher highs. The latest weekly wick reached $87k, which means buyers are still defending the higher ground.

If this structure holds, Bitcoin could follow its October seasonality, which has averaged an 18% ROI, potentially pushing the price to $98k by month-end.

However, the coming week could put this bullish setup through its paces. ISM Services PMI, ADP Employment data, and FOMC minutes were on the calendar, alongside jobless claims and Michigan’s inflation expectations. ADP was scheduled for the 6th of October, while one-year inflation expectations had previously jumped to 4.6%.

In essence, Bitcoin is set to enter another critical macro-heavy week, with its technical setup suggesting the potential for a breakout or breakdown. The timing, however, tilts the momentum to one side.

Can Bitcoin’s breakout survive rising yields?

As per the chart above, U.S. 30-year mortgage rates have jumped to 7.6%. This means that the bond market faces increased pressure, with 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields also climbing to multi-month highs. Why is it important? Because the market is clearly expecting higher inflation. Therefore, higher yields are an obstacle for Bitcoin, as a rising interest rate environment usually decreases demand for risk assets.

In this context, the upcoming macro week could be crucial for Bitcoin [BTC], especially with the Coinbase Premium Index showing early signs of recovery, which would indicate that the U.S. spot demand is returning. The critical question, however, is whether this re-emerging U.S. demand will become a genuine BTC catalyst or will it be a short-lived bounce preceding another bearish phase.

Bitcoin’s U.S. demand faces a key macro test

Based on a key on-chain signal, it appears that investor patience is starting to run out.

According to CoinGlass, the closest BTC whale orders are a $13.25 million bid at $82,500 and a $15.52 million ask at $84,799.90, which means that whales are adding liquidity to both sides, with the $84.8k asking price forming an immediate resistance area. On the other hand, the Liquidation Heatmap suggests that long liquidations massively overshadow shorts, so if the situation at the top begins to change, BTC may experience a significant unwinding.

It’s worth noting that Bitcoin’s current state leaves scope for a bear move. Rate FUD is already gaining ground as Treasury yields rise and the upcoming macro week may add further pressure. Within this scenario, the whale orders appear less like a fluke and more as early positioning ahead of higher volatility.

Against this backdrop, the recent recovery in Bitcoin’s Coinbase Premium Index looks suspicious so far.

As whale orders accumulate, technical volatility grows, and Treasury yields climb, renewed U.S. demand may well turn out to be a fakeout before the next leg down. This leaves Bitcoin’s structure near $85k increasingly bearish, with the upcoming macro week posing a clear risk of further downside pressure.

Final Summary

  • U.S. demand is picking up, but rising yields could keep pressure on Bitcoin.
  • BTC’s $85k setup remains weak, with the risk of a deeper pullback.
