Altcoin momentum is fading as fewer Binance-listed tokens maintain their long-term uptrends. Between late August and early October, the share trading below the 200-day moving average plunged from 81% to under 10%.
However, the latest reading has climbed to 42.4%, showing that selling pressure has returned across the sector. This reversal suggests investors are taking profits and reducing exposure after the recent rally.
While Bitcoin [BTC] has recovered toward $81,500, it reinforces its current status as the strongest asset within the altcoin universe. This implies that investor activity is declining within the altcoin universe due to declining interest in participating in this space.
Consequently, capital rotation toward Bitcoin could leave smaller tokens struggling to attract fresh demand.

Therefore, if additional altcoins begin to fall below their respective 200-day moving averages, the overall breadth of the market will decrease significantly.
Altcoin selling deepens
Altcoins experienced their largest decline at weekends since mid-April, as the median top-500 token declined by 5.8% by Sunday, the 18th of October. Glassnode data illustrates a significant change in trading behavior among investors pulling out of risky assets.
Since Bitcoin’s lows in June, consistent profits were made by traders who bought on Friday and sold on Sunday. However, that positive relationship was broken during this weekend’s sell-off as market conditions rapidly changed and undermined previously successful trading strategies.

As a result of Bitcoin’s slide toward $81,500, selling pressures grew, which left little room for altcoins to absorb additional declines. As concerns about equities spilled into cryptocurrency markets, investors may choose to focus on protecting their capital rather than making speculative investments.
Those changes could lead to weaker buy-ins on dips, creating longer-term losses among altcoins, and potentially make it even more difficult for them to stage recoveries in upcoming sessions.
Bitcoin dominance hits a 14-month high
Losses sustained during the weekend revealed the vulnerabilities associated with altcoins. Meanwhile, Bitcoin dominance (BTC.D) has surged to 60.77%.
The surge in dominance is currently the highest it has been in 14 months, indicating a large shift in the distribution of market value among competing cryptocurrencies.
The historical trend shows Bitcoin dominance falling from nearly 95% before Ethereum [ETH] and other cryptocurrencies gained ground.

Ethereum’s share has fallen to 10%, while other cryptocurrencies account for just 28% of the total market share. Those factors indicate the growing pressures facing altcoins as more and more capital moves toward Bitcoin.
Recovering from the losses faced by altcoins now will require both strong demand for altcoins and wider participation in this area of the market. If the dominance remains, there will be more doubts regarding a market-wide rebound before the end of the year.
