Many investors take direct ownership a step further by choosing self-custody. Rather than leaving your assets on the exchange, where they may be at risk of hacking/phishing attempts or can be frozen by the exchange, you can withdraw your BTC or ETH to a crypto wallet you control.

The process follows a similar pattern on most crypto exchanges:

• Create an account on a crypto exchange.

• Verify your identity.

• Connect a bank account or payment method.

• Buy bitcoin or ethereum.

• Optionally, withdraw to a self-custody wallet.

When you use self-custody, you rely on something called a private key. A private key is a cryptographic string of letters and numbers that proves ownership of your coins on a blockchain. • When the ETF price gets too high: If high demand pushes the ETF share price above the coin’s price, APs step in. They buy the coin directly, give it to the ETF provider, and receive new ETF shares in return. They then sell those new shares on the open market for a profit. This increases the supply of shares and pulls the ETF price back down to match the coin.

• When the ETF price gets too low: If the ETF share price drops below the coin’s price, the reverse happens. APs buy the cheap ETF shares, return them to the provider, and receive the actual coin in return. They then sell the coin for a profit. This decreases the supply of shares and pushes the ETF price back up.

This constant creation and redemption process keeps the ETF price closely aligned with the spot price of the crypto asset.

Key differences: Is it better to own bitcoin or Bitcoin ETF?

Custody and control

When you buy a spot ETF, a third party holds the crypto. You own shares of the fund rather than the underlying asset. You’re trusting the provider and its custodian to secure the underlying asset that gives those shares value. This custody introduces risk. What happens if the private keys held by the custodian are compromised? Spot ETFs are closely regulated by the SEC, which approves custodians when the fund is created, but regulation won’t prevent a worst-case scenario. If the crypto backing the fund goes missing, the share value plummets.

The difference is in who you trust: a company with countless employees or yourself. Let’s compare the ETF structure to owning the coin directly. You have complete control when buying the coin directly and withdrawing to a self-custody wallet. Your wallet holds the private keys that control the asset on the blockchain. Accessibility and trading hours

Spot crypto ETFs trade on traditional stock exchanges. You can only buy and sell them during standard market hours, which are 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET on weekdays. The crypto market never sleeps.

Direct ownership allows you to trade 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The trade-off is that you can’t hold coins directly in a tax-advantaged account, like an IRA. ETFs fit easily into your existing retirement and brokerage accounts.

Fees and expenses

You might also pay a commission to your brokerage, although many brokers have dropped these fees.

With direct ownership, you avoid ongoing management fees. Instead, you pay network fees to send your coins to your wallet, often called gas fees. You also pay trading fees on crypto exchanges when you buy or sell. Limit orders have the lowest fees, often 0.4% of the order value or lower.

For example, BlackRock’s iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ETHB) now stakes a portion of its holdings to earn staking rewards (paid in ETH), passing that yield on to shareholders.

However, there’s a trade-off. Staking ETFs must keep some assets liquid for redemptions, which reduces potential yield. In simple terms, they can’t stake 100% of the ETH — as much as 30% remains idle.

• No lost keys: The custodian holds the coins, so you can’t accidentally lose your private key or seed phrase and lock yourself out of your money.

Spot crypto ETF cons

• Limited trading hours: You can only buy and sell during standard stock market hours. You miss out on the 24/7 crypto market.

• Expense ratios: You pay an annual fee for the fund’s management and custody. These fees reduce your overall returns over time. While expense ratios can be as low as 0.25%, they’re an ongoing daily cost.

• No on-chain utility: You cannot use your ETF shares to transact on the network or participate in decentralized finance.

• Custodial risk: While ETFs are regulated, that regulation can’t prevent cold-storage private keys from falling into the wrong hands. In the end, you’re trusting someone else to safeguard your investment.

Direct ownership pros

• 24/7 trading: The crypto market trades around the clock. You can sip your coffee and trade on a Sunday morning while the stock market is closed.

• Control: Once you withdraw to a self-custody wallet, you hold the private keys that control your crypto on a blockchain. No one can block your transactions, freeze your account, or disappear with your crypto.

• On-chain utility: You can use your BTC or ETH to interact with applications, lend your assets, or send crypto globally without a go-between.

• No management fees: You avoid the annual expense ratios charged by ETFs. You sidestep ongoing fees, paying only one-time exchange trading fees when you trade and network fees when you withdraw.

Direct ownership cons

• Private key security: If you choose self-custody and lose your seed phrase, you also lose access to your cryptocurrency. The coins still exist on the blockchain, but you can’t transfer them without your wallet’s private key. Being your own bank means keeping offline backups.

• Steeper learning curve: Setting up a self-custody wallet and using it safely requires effort and a willingness to learn. Expect to invest an hour or more learning how a crypto wallet works and best practices for secure storage.
